Supreme Court - Historical Background to Election Year Nominations

Here's some historical background which puts McConnell's hold on the Garland SCOTUS nomination in perspective.

Since 1950,  Twenty-Seven Justices have Left Office - only four Died.
Four died  and 23 resigned or retired. Those who died were:
  1. Fred Vinson - 1953
  2. Robert Jackson - 1954
  3. Rehnquist - 2005
  4. Scalia - 2016.
Of the 23 that resigned or retired, only 2 did so in an election year.
First, Sherman Minton who retired due to bad health on October 15, 1956.  Justice Brennen replaced him on October 16, 1956 - but was not confirmed until March 19, 1957.  Note: had Stevenson been elected, he would've replaced Brennan with his own choice.

Second, in June 1968, Chief Justice Warren resigned - pending confirmation of a successor. However, lame-duck LBJ chose Abe Fortas - who had ethical problems - and the Senate refused to confirm.  As a result, Nixon appointed Warren Burger as the new Chief Justice in June 1969. Which made Earl Warren very sad.

Summary
Historically,  SCOTUS judge openings rarely occur in an election year.
  • Judges rarely die in office, (only four since 1950) and the chances they will do so in election year are only 1 in 4.
  • Retiring Judges almost never leave in a presidential election year. Only two Judges out of twenty-three did so. And Minton delayed his resignation till Oct 15th so Stevenson, (if elected) could  replace  Ike's recess appointment.
  • Earl Warren was the only Justice, who tried to "game the system." A hard-core liberal, he wanted lame-duck LBJ to appoint his successor - not Richard Nixon.  However, the Senate didn't go along.
  •  Since 1950, the Senate has NEVER confirmed a SCOTUS Nominee in an election year.

The Real Question of Immigration

The fundamental subject question raised by the Bomb Brothers is this: Who gets to choose who comes to America: immigrants or Americans? The entire marketing campaign has been framed around pushing the mindset that it's racist for Americans to try to choose who gets in. Instead of choosing, we should just take what we are given by the rest of the world and be grateful for their vibrant diversity. If you live in the Boston area and your windows have been rattling, well, that's just the vibrancy manifesting itself.

On those who think George Zimmerman Guilty

"The freethinkers They have yet to produce any objections that have not long been refuted most thoroughly. But since they are not motivated by the love of truth, and since they have an entirely different point of view, we should not be surprised that the best refutations count for nothing and that the weakest and most ridiculous reasoning, which has so often been shown to be baseless, is continuously repeated. If these people maintained the slightest rigor, the slightest taste for the truth, it would be quite easy to steer them away from their errors; but their tendency towards stubbornness makes this completely impossible." - Updated Leonhard Euler

The truth about Illegal Immigration and Amnesty

"We have laws today that are utterly ignored, and I have no confidence that this administration, based on what we’ve seen, will ever enforce any law." - Senator Sessions

And that is all you need to know.  Because the Democrats will oppose ANY attempt to truly enforce the immigration laws, Amnesty will accomplish nothing but create millions of new Democrat voters and encourage millions of new illegals to come here.

The Sierra Club and "Diversity"

The liberal bureaucrats who have captured the Sierra Club once blogged, “Yep, We’re Too White” and claim to see more diversity as a worthwhile goal. But no white leader of the organization has ever volunteered to resign from a well-paid position so a diverse person could take it.

Postmodern discourse

Following are ten of its hallmarks, as Roberts describes on his blog:
  • “persons and positions are ordinarily closely related,” with little insistence on keeping personal identity separate from the questions or issues under discussion;
  • “sensitivity, inclusivity, and inoffensiveness are key values”;
  • priority on “cooperation, collaboration, quietness, sedentariness, empathy, equality, non-competitiveness, conformity, a communal focus”;
  • “seems lacking in rationality and ideological challenge,” in the eyes of proponents of modern discourse;
  • tends to perceive the satire and criticism of modern discourse as “vicious and personal attack, driven by a hateful animus”;
  • is oriented to ” the standard measures of grades, tests, and a closely defined curriculum”;
  • lacking “means by which to negotiate or accommodate such intractable differences within its mode of conversation,” it will “typically resort to the most fiercely antagonistic, demonizing, and personal attacks upon the opposition”;
  • “will typically try, not to answer opponents with better arguments, but to silence them completely as ‘hateful’, ‘intolerant’, ‘bigoted’, ‘misogynistic’, ‘homophobic’, etc.”;
  • has a more feminine flavor, as opposed to the more masculine flavor of modern discourse;
  • results in “stale monologues” and contexts that “seldom produce strong thought, but rather tend to become echo chambers.”

vidal - the empire strikes back

Published in 1986 and was Vidal counter attack against Norman Podhoretz and Midge Decter.  It didn't make Vidal many friends on either the left or the right but is an example of his "take no prisoners rhetoric" It caused quite a stir in 1986, but is now just an historical curiosity.
"Recently, Norman Mailer and I chatted together at the Royale Theatre in New York, under the auspices of PEN American Center. Part of what I said was reprinted in these pages on January 11, under the title, not mine, “Requiem for the American Empire.” I gave a bit of a history lesson about our empire’s genesis, and I brooded on its terminus last fall, when Tokyo took over from New York as the world’s economic center.
My conclusion: for America to survive economically in the coming Sino-Japanese world, an alliance with the Soviet Union is a necessity. After all, the white race is a minority race with many well deserved enemies, and if the two great powers of the Northern Hemisphere don’t band together, we are going to end up as farmers–or, worse, mere entertainment–for the more than one billion grimly efficient Asiatics. In principle, Mailer agreed.
As expected, that wonderful, wacky couple, Norman (Poddy) Podhoretz and his wife, Midge Decter, checked in. The Lunts of the right wing (Israeli Fifth Column Division), they are now, in their old age, more and more like refugees from a Woody Allen film: The Purple Prose of West End Avenue.
Poddy was the first to respond. He is the editor of Commentary (circulation 55,000, and allegedly falling; paid for by the American Jewish Committee). He is best known–and by me loved–for his autobiographical “novel,” Making It, in which he tells us that he has made it because he has become editor of Commentary and might one day be a guest at the White House, as he has already been a guest of Huntington Hartford in Nassau.
Over the years, Poddy has, like his employers, the A.J.C., moved from those liberal positions traditionally occupied by American Jews (and me) to the far right of American politics. The reason for that is simple. In order to get Treasury money for Israel (last year $5 billion), pro-Israel lobbyists must see to it that America’s “the Russians are coming” squads are in place so that they can continue to frighten the American people into spending enormous sums for “defense,” which also means the support of Israel in its never-ending wars against just about everyone.
To make sure that nearly a third of the Federal budget goes to the Pentagon and Israel, it is necessary for the pro-Israel lobbyists to make common cause with our lunatic right. Hence, the virulent propaganda.
Poddy denounced Mailer and me in the pages of the New York Post. According to him, we belong to that mindless majority of pinko intellectuals who actually think that the nation spends too much on the Pentagon and not enough on, say, education. Since sustained argument is not really his bag, he must fall back on the ad hominem attack, a right-wing specialty–and, of course, on our flag, which he wears like a designer kaftan because “the blessings of freedom and prosperity are greater and more widely shared [here] than in any country known to human history.” Poddy should visit those Western European countries whose per capita income is higher than ours. All in all, Poddy is a silly billy.
Significantly, the one Yiddish word that has gained universal acceptance in this country is chutzpah. Example: In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Podhoretz were in upstate New York where I used to live. I was trying out a play at the Hyde Park Playhouse; the play was set during the Civil War. “Why,” asked Poddy, “are you writing a play about, of all things, the Civil War?” I explained to him that my mother’s family had fought for the Confederacy and my father’s for the Union, and that the Civil War was–and is–to the United States what the Trojan War was to the Greeks, the great single tragic event that continues to give resonance to our Republic.
“Well, to me,” said Poddy, “the Civil War is as remote and as irrelevant as the War of the Roses.” I realized then that he was not planning to become an “assimilated American,” to use the old-fashioned terminology; but, rather, his first loyalty would always be to Israel. Yet he and Midge stay on among us, in order to make propaganda and raise money for Israel–a country they don’t seem eager to live in. Jewish joke, circa 1900: A Zionist is someone who wants to ship other people off to Palestine.
Midge was next to strike. But before she launched her attack, in something called Contentions, she put on her thinking cap and actually read what I wrote. I give her high marks for that. Unfortunately, she found my history lesson hard going. But then, like most of our Israeli fifth columnists, Midge isn’t much interested in what the goyim were up to before Ellis Island. She also likes the ad hominem attack. When I noted that our writers seldom speak out on matters of war and peace because so many of them are paid for by universities that receive money from the garrison state, Midge tartly retorted, “He, after all, is not paid by a university but by those great centers of independence, the film companies.” Since my last Hollywood film, The Best Man, was made in 1964, I have been “paid” by that American public that buys my books about the American past, a subject of no demonstrable interest to Midge and Poddy and their friends.
Midge was amazed by my description of how we seized territories from Mexico, including California; annexed Hawaii and Puerto Rico and, of course, the Philippines, where we slaughtered between 100,000 and 200,000 of the inhabitants. Interesting note: American imperialists froth if the figures for those murdered are ever in excess of 60,000 men, women and children, the acceptable statistical minimum for genocide. Then Midge, with that magisterial gooniness that marks her polemical style, told us, “that three of these conquered territories are now states of the United States, and a fourth an independent republic, is evidently beside the point–as, we cannot resist remarking. . . .”
Oh, Midge, resist. Resist! Don’t you get the point? We stole other people’s land. We murdered many of the inhabitants. We imposed our religion–and rule–on the survivors. General Grant was ashamed of what we did to Mexico, and so am I. Mark Twain was ashamed of what we did in the Philippines, and so am I. Midge is not because in the Middle East another predatory people is busy stealing other people’s land in the name of an alien theocracy. She is a propagandist for these predators (paid for?), and that is what all this nonsense is about.
Since spades may not be called spades in freedom’s land, let me spell it all out. In order to get military and economic support for Israel, a small number of American Jews, who should know better, have made common cause with every sort of reactionary and anti-Semitic group in the United States, from the corridors of the Pentagon to the TV studios of the evangelical Jesus-Christers. To show that their hearts are in the far-right place, they call themselves neoconservatives, and attack the likes of Mailer and me, all in the interest of supporting the likes of Sharon and Israel as opposed to the Peace Now Israelis whom they disdain. There is real madness here; mischief too.
“Well, one thing is clear in all this muddle,’’ writes Midge, adrift in her tautological sea, “Mr. Vidal does not like his country.” Poor Midge. Of course I like my country. After all, I’m its current biographer. But now that we’re really leveling with each other, I’ve got to tell you I don’t much like your country, which is Israel.
Although there is nothing wrong with being a lobbyist for a foreign power, one is supposed to register with the Justice Department. Also, I should think that tact would require a certain forbearance when it comes to the politics of the host country. But tact is unknown to the Podhoretzes. Joyously they revel in the politics of hate, with plangent attacks on blacks and/or fags and/or liberals, trying, always, to outdo those moral majoritarians who will, as Armageddon draws near, either convert all the Jews, just as the Good Book says, or kill them.
All in all, the latest Podhoretz diatribes have finally convinced me that the time has come for the United States to stop all aid not only to Israel but to Jordan, Egypt and the rest of the Arab world.* The Middle Easterners would then be obliged to make peace, or blow one another up, or whatever. In any case, we would be well out of it. ** After all, the theological and territorial quarrels of Israel and Islam *** are as remote to 200 million Americans as–what else?–the War of the Roses."

Conservatives - even when lose they think they win

Reminds me of this from Larry Auster (who's a racist but often right):

"So I have my answer. There is no absurdity to which conservatives will not resort in order to claim that conservatism has really won, and thus that conservatism is still a viable movement. America could be officially proclaimed a Soviet state tomorrow, and the conservative pundits would chortle—just as they did about every leftward move by George W. Bush—that this is really a brilliant Machiavellian maneuver by which the conservative agenda is being advanced

Then of course there are people like Frum, but I guess the less said about people like that, the better—save to point out that it’s no wonder they’re E.J. Dionne’s and Sam Tannenhaus’s type of “conservative,” namely in-house conservatives who know their role, which is (a) to serve as a handy whipping-boy/scapegoat for policies that go awry, and (b) to transform leftist policies into “bi-partisan consensus of all reasonable, decent, thoughtful people.”

This just in - Ted Kennedy still Dead

Mary Jo Kopechne could not reached for comment.

From the Onion: Kennedy Curse claims 77-year old tumor ridden binge-drinker

From Iowa Hawk: You stay here While I Swim and Get us some universal Health Care

From Andrew Breitbart: "How I calculated WHEN to attack TK: Multiplied time he spent trying to save MJKs life & to be safe multiplied it by billion. But still got 0."

From Roger Kimball The Kennedy family has issued a eulogistic statement about the death of the Senior Senator from Massachusetts. Right and proper, I suppose, but I couldn’t help recoiling from its lists: “Edward M. Kennedy — the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply — died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port.”Edward M. Kennedy,”

I heard echoing behind those words, “Liar, cheat, drunk, philanderer, and — let’s not forget — inadvertent murderer.

”The tsunami of sentimental pap about Kennedy is already churning, gushing, rushing to inundate the public with a nauseating and untruthful fairy tale about the “Lion of the Senate.” The Lyin’ in the Senate is more like it. Kennedy was 77 when he was taken off last night, Mary Jo Kopechne had just turned 29 when Kennedy’s car veered off the bridge in Chappaquiddick and he wriggled free and swam to shore, leaving the young woman trapped in the car to drown."

Others Say Goodbye to Fat Ted:

  • But who can forget the happy, dignified moments, like the halcyon days of the William Kennedy Smith rape trial? Au Bar! Classy, indeed.
  • For whom did Sen. Kennedy show compassion? Bork? Thomas? The Kopechnes? Please, this is not about politics. This is about decency.
  • So... Can I imagine life without Ted Kennedy? As a matter of fact, I can. Tonight, I will go to bed and sleep. Tomorrow, I will wake up, consume a caffeinated beverage of some sort and go to work. After work, I will go back to my house, eat dinner and go to bed. The next morning, the cycle will start again. As hard as it may seem for those at MSNBC to believe, the chances of me thinking of Ted Kennedy in that average day are roughly 0.0%.
  • Which was the great part, killing Mary Jo, abusing the waitress, supporting infanticide, or becoming a KGB operative to be a traitor to our country?
  • IF by “greatest statesman”, you mean greatest manipulator, boozer, murderer, and total a$$ who pretty much bastardized his own children(IMHO)when he had his marriage to Joan annulled, yeah, then I agree, he was one of the greatest. I think it’s gonna be really warm for Teddy from now on…R.I.H.
  • There is not one thing he proposed that deals with helping people who actually work for a living, or a business, or promoting capitalism. It is an absolute litany of destructive liberalism. He is the absolute worst.
  • ”His last words to Obama were "Just win one for the Swimmer"
  • I’m starting to think that Dean Wormer was wrong. Apparently fat, drunk, and stupid IS the way to go through life.
  • Ted Kennedy wasn’t particularly smart but he knew he could count on rubes like you keep voting for him despite all his misdeeds. Was he sticking up for you while moving his assets offshore to avoid his own tax policies? Or killing a wind-power plant that might sully the view from his mansion?

Why McCain choose Palin as V-P

Or more accurately, "How McCain desperately wanted to choose Joe Lieberman but was talked out of it." The Washington Post tells the story.

Of course, like Pravda, you have to read between the lines to understand what really happened. In short, the Republican nominee for POTUS, was dead set on nominating Al Gore's Running mate as the Republican VP. And of course if McCain had died during his first term, a liberal democrat would have become the head of a Republican Administration. This wasn't some crazy "Maverick" idea, all of McCain's advisers wanted it to happen as did Lindsey Graham.

So why didn't it happen? The McCain advisers - at the last moment - talked to some honest to God (outside the beltway) Republicans and realized that a Lieberman nomination would result in a floor fight and possible walkout of several state delegations. So the whole McCain plan of waiting till the last minute and springing Lieberman on the GOP was ditched.

Palin was picked as a panic last minute choice.

So there you have it. The GOP nominated a man who wanted a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT as his VP (and possible POTUS) - and we know - so-called Conservatives - Hewitt, Goldberg and Kristol were A-ok with this. Does anyone think the GOP establishment would have objected to McCain-Lieberman? Of course not. They would told conservatives to STFU and support "our" nominee.

The insanity of it is mind boggling. To go in 20 years from Reagan to Lieberman. The GOP is hopeless. Grass-roots Conservatives, you're being played for suckers and if you stay in the GOP you are fools.

McCain - We are all Iranians Now

Crazy McCain is at it again. Incredibly, I agree with Uber Hack Joe Klein. Per Klein:

"For two years now, John McCain has been entirely consistent on Iran: every last statement he’s made—at least, those that I’ve seen—has been (a) fabulously uninformed and (b) dangerously bellicose. He’s still at it, apparently. There is no question that President Obama’s more prudent path is the correct one right now. There is also no question that the neoconservatives are trying to gin up this situation into an excuse for not engaging with the Iranian government in the near future—and also as a rationale for their dearest, looniest dream, war with Iran.
***
The point is, neoconservatives like McCain and Wehner just can’t seem to quit their dangerous habit of making broad, extreme statements based on ideology rather than detailed knowledge of the situation in Iran and elsewhere."
That's the big problems with people like McCain. They're always looking for a fight, some war or conflict to start. To them its always 1961 and its time to "bear any burden" and to hell with all that boring domestic stuff - why Paraguay is on the march and must be stopped, its Hitler all over again! Always its the same story - we need to go on a crusade & blow up stuff.

We need to be engaged in the world, but remember what two Presidents said:

"America does not go abroad searching for monsters to destroy" and "Speak Softly, and carry a Big Stick".

Edgelings - A Commenter Bestiary

By Michael Malone. Pretty Funny. He has about 20 examples of blog commenters , here are some:

The Droll - The mainstay of all fun sites, this poster regularly tosses out clever comments, plays of words, one-liners, amusing pictures. There’s a lot of these characters on places like Fark.com

The Relentless Pol - Posters who can’t join any discussion without immediately using it to make a political point, i.e., “The current lack of sunspots is the direct result of the Bush Administration’s failed policies.”

The Butt-Kisser - Famous writers and bloggers get this one. It’s the poster who just can’t say enough about how brilliant was that last entry, how they wish they could say it half as good, etc. My assumption is that these folks are angling for some kind of personal relationship with the writer.

The Kumbaya - These folks always show up two-thirds the way through any heated on-line debate and asks “Why can’t we all just get along?” They are inevitably ignored or trashed.

The Parser - What would we do without the Internet Grammar Police? These folks assiduously correct the online writings of others - never quite catching on that the Web is designed to be fast, fresh and sloppy.

The Alien - This is a poster from another country who has no context for what every commenter is talking about, and so asserts his or her own cultural solution: “Why this complain about wife? Sell gotes and buy more wifes!”

The Martian - Finally, these are the commentators whose combination of pretzel logic, conspiratorial tone, and downright weirdness - “Well, we all know the Pope is behind that big lake of fire at the South Pole, don’t we?” - reminds you that the world is an even scarier place than we imagine, and makes you wonder if this writing for the Internet gig is such a good idea after all.

Matt Y - stupid Libertarians

In response to this moronic libertarian comment from Baum (Bloomberg Columnist):

The government needs Liddy and Citigroup’s Vikram Pandit and Bank of America’s Ken Lewis to continue working to restore their firms to prosperity in the same way the looters in Rand’s novel need Hank Reardon and Francisco d’Anconia and Dagny Taggart, respectively, to run their steel mills, copper mines and railroad.

Matt Yglesias writes:

Atlas Shrugged is a stupid book, Ayn Rand is a stupid woman, and John Galt’s ideas are stupid. That said, none of them are nearly this stupid. Rand’s novel isn’t about a world in which executives who build companies based on a lot of incorrect decisions, then pay themselves millions of dollars while bankrupting their firms, then come to the government hat-in-hand asking for bailouts, then find that the bailers-out want to attach some strings to their hundreds of billions of dollars in public funds and then go to hide out in Galt’s Gulch. That doesn’t make any sense at all.

If the folks running Citigroup and Bank of America and AIG were good at their jobs, we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place. That’s the point. But they weren’t good. They lost staggering sums of money. Their companies went broke. They had to beg for taxpayer dollars. You don’t get to do that and then turn around and “go Galt.”

Former Republican POTUS nominee back attacking Republicans

From the WaPo:

"Two and a half months removed from his defeat in the race for the presidency, colleagues say, McCain bears more resemblance to the unpredictable and frequently bipartisan lawmaker they have served with for decades than the man who ran an often scathing campaign against Barack Obama. In some instances, he's even carrying water for his former rival.

"Mac is back!" one of his devoted friends in the Senate declared as McCain walked into the chamber Wednesday to deliver his first speech of the 111th Congress: a blunt admonishment of Republicans delaying Hillary Rodham Clinton's confirmation as secretary of state."

Is anyone surprised? Back to his old tricks - but from the Senate not the White House -thank goodness. And Nicole Wallace (McCain Campaign) chimes in about how much she *loves* Barrack:

"
Obama deserves our thanks for letting Republicans root for him, as well. He has created a space within his wide net of support for those of us who fought for John McCain’s candidacy by honoring the McCains at a dinner the night before his inauguration and by listening to McCain’s ideas on national security, climate change, and government reform. The Obamas have also returned the civility and warmth directed at them by president and Mrs. Bush in a way that sets this transition apart from others in recent history. This generosity of spirit has had a ripple effect throughout Republican circles. Two former senior aides to President George W. Bush said to me over the weekend, “I expect him [President Obama] to be there for eight years.” A former senior official of Bush’s re-election campaign predicted that he would contribute to Obama’s re-election effort."

What the Republicans must do to Avoid another McCain

McCain was not the choice of a majority of Republicans. He was a lucky bastard who used the crazy Republican primary process to win a victory with 35 to 40 percent of the vote. If Conservatives want a decent nominee they'll have to do the following:

1) Get rid of open primaries. Its crazy that liberal democrats get to vote and choose our nominee.

2) Get rid of - or reform - winner-take-all. McCain won an incredible amount of delegates in winner-take-all states with just 35-40 percent of the vote. So, get rid of it or modify it. I'd suggest WTA for anyone who get over 50 percent of the vote or for very small states like Wyoming - otherwise we need proportional representation.

3) Stop front loading the Primaries. McCain won the nomination by Feb 2008. Was this a great advantage? No. The primary season needs to be stretched out, so we conservatives have time to mobilize and stop terrible nominees. Its insane to nominate your candidate in February and then have him hang for 6 months until the convention.

4) Reduce the Power of the Blue States. California, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, D.C. Hawaii, etc. have too much say in who gets nominated. These states haven't voted Republican in 20 years and aren't likely to vote Republican for the rest of the 21st century. Why are we giving DC Republicans any votes? They only get 15 percent of the D.C. vote!

5) Stop having Liberal MSM types hold our Debates. It was crazy to watch debates hosted by Chris Matthews, liberal editorial writers, and CNN & listen to endless questions that were of no interest to Republican primary voters. Or hostile questions that were designed to make Republicans look bad. For every question on illegal immigration you got 2 stupid liberal question on the Genesis or evolution. Global warming was discussed more than taxes. Crazy to have our candidates talk about their issues and not ours. So have the debates moderated by Conservative talk show hosts, conservative TV anchors, Fox News, even Republican politicians.
I'd love to have watched a debate moderated by Brit Hume or Rush.

McCain Lost - Thank Goodness

I didn't vote for Obama but McCain lost - so I couldn't be happier. This backstabbing, 72 year old warmongering hothead never should have been nominated. I predicted he would lose and he did. He now goes back to the Senate and "reaching across the aisle". How long before he & the NYT ed op page kiss and make up?

[Just read this on Kaus " Reader C.C. suggests a "perfecta option"' in which you guess the date McCain "will self-servingly apologize, and be immediately forgiven, in the course of an exclusive interview with Joe Klein." My money is on next Wednesday"]

Anyway, I no longer have to dread 4 years of his stabbing conservatives in the back. Or 4 years of conservatives defending him - like some abused wife - for every sell-out and liberal policy. I no longer have to dread Joe Lieberman as AG or Secretary of State. I no longer have to dread the Republican party lining up behind amnesty & illegal immigration. I no longer have to dread listening to Grahame every day or McCain bombing Iran or starting a new Cold War. I no longer have to dread his taking Republicans on a death march that would have been ended with veto proof Democrat Congress in 2010.

Obama may make mistakes and pass bad laws. But if so, the country will hold the Democrats accountable and elect Republicans in 2012 to fix them.

Adjusted AGI - Why libertarinism is a dead end

Summary of Federal Individual Income Tax Data, 2005 (updated October 2007)

Number of Tax Payers & Percent AGI
Top 10% (Greater than $103,912) 46.44%
Top 25% (Greater than $62,608) 67.52%
Top 50% (Greater than $30,881) 87.13%
Bottom 50% (Less than $30,881) 12.87%

This table show why Libertarianism and constant yakking about Capital gains and tax cuts has limited appeal. It also shows why the Republican party needs social conservatives. Fifty percent of the US population has an AGI of less than $30,881 - and they pay only 13 percent of Federal Taxes. If you make this amount you're probably better off voting Democrat. You can't get these people to vote Republican based on Chamber-of-Commerce talking points. You have to appeal to them on social issues, patriotism, or jobs and the overall economy.

McCain and the Freddie Mac Letter

Get Drunk and Vote 4 McCain has a letter showing McCain "warning" about the possible risk Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae's posed to US Taxpayers. This is supposed to support McCain's debating point that he was warning the country about the current financial crisis.

The problem is that its not "McCain's Letter", its Chuck Hagel's letter and its written in support of Chuck Hagel's bill S190. 19 other Republican senators signed the letter. As for Senate bill 190, the bill that was to reform Freddie and Fannie, it died in committee. The history of this bill, shows Hagel introduced the bill in January 2005. It was voted down in committee in July 2005. McCain didn't co-sponsored the bill until May 2006 with 3 other senators & McCain did not co-sponsor the bill in the next Congressional session (Jan 2007).

The other key point is that the Republican Senate killed S190. And I see no evidence that Bush supported it.

McCain's supporters can talk all they want - but the fact is that Republicans controlled the Executive branch and Congress from Jan 2003 to Jan 2007 and did nothing to rein in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. McCain other than co-sponsoring the letter has no record of warning against the current crisis or sub-prime mortgages.

McCain vs Obama - Round One

Initial thoughts:

McCain did poorly. He was never a good speaker or debater. Flubbed his scripted one-liners, lots of senate speak, mindlessly rattling off places he visited. Invoking Henry Kissinger (lets all bow our heads) who is popular with who?

Ugh, and talking about how Corporate taxes are too high! Maybe the 700 billion bailout will make the corporate fat cats feel better. Babbling about $18 billion in earmarks when the defense budget is 500 billion and the total budget is 2,000 billion.

And why the constant laughing and creepy smiles while Obama talked? That will lose him votes. And the KGB talk about Putin was scary.

He'd better hope for the "Bradley effect" or he's toast.
